What Can Other Cities Learn from Oakland's ECAP

Oakland holds a proud and illustrious history of environmental and civil rights advocacy and has never shied from improving its sustainability efforts. The city is amongst the top campaigners of the twenty-first century, constantly striving for environmental justice, sustainable urban farming, etc. It is home to a large number of operations that convert abandoned lands into farms.

Oakland has a population of over 400,000 with more than two-thirds of its residents being people of color. The city prospers from a vibrant culture garnered via regional initiatives to enhance the quality of life of its residents. Oakland’s creativity for improvement and capacity-building ethos has inspired its activists to take part in national campaigns to thwart established procedures, diverge from established laws, and challenge stringent constitutions restricting development.

Oakland’s 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP) 

The 2030 ECAP is a result of extensive community organizations and participation, actively engaged in civic affairs. A successor of Oakland's 2018 Climate Emergency and Just Transition Resolution. 2030 ECAP outlines the steps to mitigate climate change, with the main focus on a 56% reduction of Oakland's greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels). The City of Oakland and its partner organizations through the latest Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP) aim to strengthen and improve the city. Oakland’s city council has also mapped out plans for "deep decarbonization" (2045 Carbon Neutrality Goal) of the building and transportation sectors by 2045. A follow-up plan to the 2020 targets of 36% reduction.
